Crab Apple Collection

Crab Apple Collection

Our Crap Apple Collection includes two wonderful trees which produce an abundance of colourful fruit which can be eaten fresh but are better suited to culinary dishes or when used in crumbles and sauces. The fruit will also provide birds with food during the sparse winter months. Reaching a mature height of 5m, these sturdy and useful trees will make a great addition to garden borders, or for gardeners with less space, these trees can be planted in large containers for the patio or decking. 60-100cm plants supplied in a 2 litre pot. Collection includes 1 each of Malus Golden Hornet and John Downie.

Planting

Make sure the roots are planted in well prepared soil, with enough room to develop.

Soil Type

Moderately fertile, well drained soil

Malus, or Crab apple as they are sometimes known are suitable for planting in most types of fertile and well drained soil. Plant in a sunny location as they do not prosper too well in the shade.
If possible prepare the ground some time in advance of planting. Open out holes and plant with enough space to accommodate the roots without cramping them. Provide a stake to help support the shrub in its early years, protecting it from strong winter winds. Mulch during cold/frost and water freely.
